Public Dialup Services

Dialup Numbers

The telephone numbers for dialing into Carnegie Mellon's public dialup pool are:

Service Telephone Number
56Kbps - V.90412 268-9000
56Kbps - V.90412 268-9900

Service to be DISCONTINUED

Because of low utilization and the cost to maintain the service, Computing Services will discontinue the free Dialup Networking Service effective June 1st, 2007.  For more information see the announcement page at: http://www.cmu.edu/computing/dialup/

Who may use the modem pools?

These public modem pools are for the use of current faculty, students, and staff members at Carnegie Mellon University. All users are required to authenticate after connecting to the modem pool, either through prompts on our terminal servers or via the Password Authentication Protocol (PAP).

Connection Instructions

Computing Services has extensive documentation on the procedures for connecting to the public modem pools.

Non-PAP Authentication

If you are using AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA), SLIP, or simple terminal emulation, you (or a script running on your machine) will need to enter your username and password at the appropriate Annex prompts. After authenticating to the Annex, you may start ARA, SLIP, or PPP or telnet to sites directly from the Annex prompt.

Prime-Time Usage

Modem pool usage during prime-time hours is regulated to ensure quality service for all members of the campus community. Please see the most recent Fair Use Guidelines for Public Dialup Services for additional information.

56Kbps Technology

All of our public modem pools are V.90 (56Kbps) capable. Unfortunately, there is still the caveat that depending upon the telephone system, you may not be able to connect at 56Kbps.
