Frequently Asked Questions

I have more than one machine I want to connect to the network; can I have a second outlet installed/activated to support it?

Student connections are subsidized by the university; each student is only permitted a single network connection of a single type in their dormitory room. This also avoids any problems of "ownership" of outlets since there is generally only one outlet per person in each dormitory room.

The most popular solution is to purchase an Ethernet hub/switch. These devices can be relatively inexpensive ($20) for a basic hub, up to thousands for a high end solution. Ethernet hubs and switches are allowed to be connected. You may not, however, install any device providing layer-3 routing functionality (ie two NICs on one machine or other routing device.)
