Network Core

We have come a long way since this white paper was written more than three years ago. Today, Carnegie Mellon's backbone is a dual-core redundant routed network, providing up to 2Gbps of inter-building connectivity.

The Andromeda project, a three year project to transform the network backbone, was completed as of August 2001. During this project, we transformed our single, flat, bridged campus network. Our current network infrastructure is built upon the Cisco Catalyst 6509 switching platform, including the MSFC router feature cards. Each large campus building has it's very own 6509. From here, each building connects to both our core0 6509 switch and the core255 6509 switch. All uplinks to core0 and core255 are done using Gigabit Ethernet. After traversing the cores, packets can head out to the Internet and Internet2 via the Pittsburgh GigaPOP.

This network map outlines our IP-layer topology.
