Network Group Projects

The Network Group is constantly maintaining our current systems while developing new technologies. Below is a synopsis of what we're working on now:

Data Communications:

  • Wireless Deployment: 2.4GHz wireless service is being tested and deployed, based on the Lucent WaveLAN products.

Network Development:

  • Network Registration System: Continued work on our network registration system (http://netreg.net.cmu.edu).
  • VPN: Improvements to our Virtual Private Networking service (using no encryption; for IP address extension purposes. (http://vpn.net.cmu.edu)
  • NetMon: Automated tools for discovery of network topology, identification of unregistered machines, and location tracking.
  • AuthBridge: Replacement of NetBar system, providing authenticated network access.
  • SIP/VoIP: Analysis and development of SIP-related tools (softphone, other clients).
  • NetNotify (development name: Epidemic): Abuse incident tracking system.

Network Engineering:

Current Projects:

  • Voice over IP: Continued support and development of campus VoIP systems and plans.
  • External Connectivitity:
    • We have upgraded our primary connection to the PSC GigaPOP to a Gigabit Ethernet connection.
    • We are exploring options for improving our current 155 Mb/sec backup link.
  • Dorm Network Infrastructure: We have upgraded the network between each dorm and our network core to run at Gigabit Ethernet, a tenfold increase over their former speed. We are currently replacing the end user hubs with switched interfaces, which will allow the students to have a high perfomance link to the rest of campus.
  • Quality of Service: We are planning our QoS strategy, to prepare our network for future services which require a low latency network infrastructure.
  • IP Multicast: Planned testing of capability of multicasting video streams across the network, as an option for future CATV service
  • Completed Projects:
    • Upgrade of wireless infrastructure, moving 10mb/s links to 100mb/s links in academic/administrative buildings.
    • Cisco AS5300 Deployment: We have replaced our analog modem pool with a digital access server capable of supporting 53kb/s connections.
    • Andromeda Project: We have completed our dual Gigabit Ethernet Cores, and have transitioned from a bridged network to an efficent routed internal network.
