Carnegie Mellon Network Group

Wireless WPA Testing

About

The Network Group is pleased to announce the WPA wireless network to Cyert Hall staff. We are testing a completely encrypted wireless network using WPA2 within Cyert Hall and we'd like your help to see if there are any problems. It is a test network, so no official support will be given. That being said, various members of the Network Group has been testing this network for several months and have yet to encounter many problems.

Why WPA?

With WPA, the packets transmitted between your client and the access point are encrypted, which prevents unauthorized users from seeing the packets using sniffing techniques, which could lead to identity theft and having your account compromised. It also allows the Network Group a greater level of access control and monitoring.

Getting Started

To get started, you'll need to follow directions to register your machine in NetReg. Once you've completed those instructions, you can get connected to the WPA network by choosing your platform's instructions: Windows or Mac OS X Tiger

Feedback

We would like to hear your feedback on our WPA wireless network. Please email wpa-testreports@andrew.cmu.edu. Do not contact the Help Center for assistance, as they have not been given information about this test network. Please only contact the provided email address.

Technical Details

Within Cyert Hall, we have installed Cisco 1200 series Access Points with multiple SSID's enabled. The CMU-WPA SSID is our encrypted network. It is validated via certificates downloaded from NetReg by a freeradius server.
