Connecting to CMU-WPA – Windows XP SP2

 

 

1. Find the certificate you just downloaded.  Double click on the certificate to have it installed.

 

 

2. Follow the wizard by clicking next

 

 

Click next again.

Type in your password here, but do not check the two boxes.  Doing so will not allow you to connect to WPA.  Click the next button.

 

Make sure automatically select certificate store is selected then click next.

 

Click Finish.  You may see a window asking you to verify that you are importing and trusting the “cmu wpa ca” certificate authority.  Click Yes.

 

3. Open the Control Panel by double clicking on the My Computer icon on your desktop.  Then click the Control Panel link under Other Places.

 

4a. If you are in Category View, click Network and Internet Connections. 

 

Then click Network Connections.

 

4b. If you are in Classic View, double click Network Connections.

 

5. Find your wireless connection.  It should have an antenna with green lines coming from the top of it.

 

6. If the connection status is Disabled, right click on the wireless connection icon and click Enable.

 

7. Right click on the wireless connection icon and click Properties.

 

8. Make sure the bottom two checkboxes are checked and then click the Wireless Networks Tab.

 

 

9. Make sure Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked.  Then click the Add… button.

 

10. For SSID, type CMU-WPA.  For Network Authentication, choose WPA2, or if WPA2 is not an option, choose WPA. If you do not have the WPA2 option, you can download the WPA2 update for Windows XP SP2. You will need to reboot your computer after installing. Do not choose WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK.  For data encryption, use AES or if that is not available, TKIP.  Now click on the Authentication tab.

 

11. Verify that we are using EAP type Smart Card or other Certificate and that Authenticate as computer and Authenticate as guest are both unchecked.  Now click the properties button.

 

 

12. For When connecting, click Use a certificate on this computer and check Use simple certificate selection.  Verify there is a check Validate server certificate.  Check Connect to these servers and type in cmu-wpa-accesspoint into the text box.  Search in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities for cmu wpa ca.  Then click OK.

 

13. Click OK again.

 

14. Click OK again (note that CMU-WPA is now listed as automatic.)

 

15. A bubble window should appear in the lower right corner.  Click on the bubble to open the Connect Wireless window.

 

16. If this does not happen, double click on the computer with the radio waves coming out of it and click View Wireless Networks


 

Then double click CMU-WPA line.

 

 

17. Change the certificate username to your hostname that you registered with then click OK.

 

 

18. You should now be connected to CMU-WPA.
